Leadership Development

Leadership in Academic Matters (LAM)

Leadership in Academic Matters (LAM) is a faculty development opportunity focused on supporting, inspiring, and rewarding those who, in these myriad roles, have demonstrated leadership characteristics and future potential.

ACC Academic Leaders Network

Every year, five faculty from across UVA are nominated and selected to participate in a year-long leadership development program with faculty participants from all Atlantic Coast Conference universities.

Leadership Coaching

Confidential, structured conversations to develop skills and habits to serve more effectively as leaders.

Coaching to Navigate Faculty Careers

In addition to coaching for leaders, Center FWD provides confidential, one-on-one and small group coaching for faculty seeking help with challenges such as:

  • Navigating complex workplace dynamics and relationships
  • Developing a manageable workload and life balance
  • Overcoming challenges with writing

Mentoring Programs

In this program for first-year faculty (second year for School of Medicine), two senior faculty meet for a monthly meal with a group of new faculty to discuss issues of concern for new faculty.

Growing External Mentoring Support (GEMS)

Supports tenure track faculty building relationships with mentors external to UVA.

Inclusive, Equitable Workplace Initiatives

UVA Acts

Through performance and dialogue UVA Acts promotes preventative practices that foster equitable, vibrant spaces for working and learning at the University of Virginia.

Equitable Faculty Workload Initiative

Center FWD will continue collaborations with each school’s leadership to implement workload dashboards and equitable service assignment processes.

Saying No: Workshops for Faculty

Evidence-based workshops, combined with applied theater performances from UVA Acts, support faculty at all career stages in discerning when and how to say no to service requests in order to say yes to other professional and personal priorities.

Search and Promotion and Tenure Committee Workshops

Workshops based in evidence-based best practices to mitigate the impacts of bias during evaluations of candidates and to promote inclusion and equity in faculty search processes and promotion and tenure evaluations.
